Almost Human

A co-worker came into my office yesterday for her sort-of-usual weekly chat which always begins with, “Can I be honest with you…?” and turns into a  1/3 vent, 1/3 nosing, 1/3 taking-a-break conversation.  Overall, I actually enjoyed this one.  However, at one point, she brought up something that happened last Thursday.  See, last thursday, at a meeting, my boss started talking about me and my upcoming bar results, and the employees started asking me questions, and - well - eventually I cried.  Not an all-out sobfest like I am prone to having on occasion, but the tears welled up and I couldn’t help it.  So, yesterday, my co-worker says, “Ya know, i think it really helped to see you cry last week.  I mean, not that we want to make you cry, but I think it showed all of us, ya know, that you are human.”

If crying makes one “human” then I am the poster child for Homo-Sapiens.

I’m sorry… that sucks. Nothing like hearing about how people see you, huh? I’m sure she meant well, but that just sounds like a backhanded compliment. You know, one that sounds well meaning, but then you realize it is a smack in the face anyway… Like those are the kind of comments you need right now.

I would try to offer encouragement, but I am exactly where you are right now, and I know it would sound like B.S. Suffice to say, I will be hopefully checking your blog this weekend, after I check the stupid bar sadists page first.

I had a similar experience. A co-worker sent me a cheesy encouraging email today and I started to cry. She gave me a hug today and is trying to be so encouraging. But I think that makes it even harder not to cry.

I’m so blessed to have found your blog (and others too). Last time, I felt so alone and just as if there was a complete void. Now, it’s as if there’s a community of all of us who actually “get it.” It’s been a big comfort to read your blog. And I will certainly be checking it this weekend and wishing you (and the rest of us!) all the best news on Friday.
